Quick Study Guide for Chapter 5

The Longest type of cabling is Horizontal Cabling.

Fiber is useful because it’s faster and does is not susceptible to EMI.

Coaxial cables have a copper center (core) and can run farther that UTP (unshielded twisted pair).

Cat 5 is the most used type of media used through out a network

10baseT uses RJ45 outlets and jacks.

CAT 5 or UTP cable is twisted in order to limit signal degradation.

RJ45 have 8 connectors (for the 4 pairs of wires).

Star Topology have a hub in the center of its topology i.e. hub and spokes or a hub cap is in the center of the your car’s wheel, with all other nodes radiating from it.

A disadvantage of using star topology is if the center node (hub or switch) fails your entire network is down and it uses a lot of media (cable).

A collision domain is when all nodes share the same media access.  Meaning all nodes have the same access to the wire at the same time.

During a collision all the data is destroyed bit by bit.

We use network segmentation to minimize collisions or to add collision domains.  We use layer 2 or 3 devices for this purpose.

Remember multiport repeaters (hubs) and repeaters extend the length of the collision domain and do not increase the number of domains.  I.e. A network with two repeaters and a hub still only have ONE collision domain.
